Anticipation - Hawai'i

hawaii-sunset.jpg

First in a series of destinations that are open or expected soon.

Even if we aren’t quite ready to travel now, we can start planning and anticipating for next year and beyond.

Open to visitors who complete online registration form and get a negative Covid test within 72 hours of departure, Hawai’i is an exotic destination with a rich and culturally diverse history.

Whether you travel for adventure, culinary experiences, culture, art and history, sports and activity, Hawai’i is the place. Oh, and there is also a beach or two.

A few interesting tidbits about this enchanting destination:

- Lei, (pronounced lay) is the same when singular or plural. There is no such word as “leis”.

- It is bad form and bad luck to give a pregnant woman a closed lei. Gift her with an open lei.

- The “w” in Hawaiʽi is pronounced like a “v”. Unless it is the first letter in a name – such as Waikiki, “w” will sound like “v”.

- There are 13 letters in the Hawaiian alphabet and five of those are vowels.

- Hula is performed by male and female dancers. Female-only hula is “Hollywood hula”.

- Hawai’i is the only US state that was once a Kingdom. Ruled as a monarchy until 1893 when US colonists overthrew the Hawaiian Kingdom in a coup. Five years later, it became a US territory. King Kamehameha Day is a state holiday.

- Kilauea is currently the world’s most active volcano, erupting continuously since 1983. The island grows by 42 acres a year due to lava deposits.

- The state is home to ten of the world’s 14 climate zones and all ten can be found on the Island of Hawai’i, or “big island”

- Aloha is not just a word or greeting. It is a way of life – love, charity, hospitality, warmth. The Aloha spirit is part of the culture of the Hawaiian people, a mantra spread by all and infused in everyday life. When you visit Hawai’i, you are embraced and enveloped by the Aloha Spirit.

What to do on Safari?

elephant hide.jpg

For many of us, an African Safari is the ultimate bucket list travel experience. We each have different visions of what Safari means. Gorilla Trekking, Great Migration, Cruising the Zambezi are all vastly different experiences. And the number of activities within those and many more adventures are endless.

Describing the list as endless, is the understatement to beat all. But there are very unique experiences on this vast continent. In no particular order, here are a few:

Africa-hotair-balloon.jpg
  • Witness the millions of wildebeest crossing the Mara River from a hot air balloon

  • Track endangered gorillas through the rainforests of Rwanda and Uganda

  • Photograph elephants at a waterhole from a “hide”

  • Awaken to the mist rising above the savannah before your first game viewing

  • Relax with a massage under a crystal clear, starry sky

  • Spend an afternoon in camp fishing for the famed Tigerfish

  • Enjoy a cocktail on a river sunset cruise as wildlife gather on the banks

  • Observe giraffes “necking” on the plains

Are you ready to go on Safari?  I’d love to help you plan it.

What's on your bucket list?

Africa-watering-hole.jpg

Since leisure travel has paused, we are left to dream. And there are no bigger dreamers than travelers. We all have our bucket lists – whether physical that we “tick off” or mental.

I’ve been very fortunate to visit some lifelong dreams – The Great Pyramids, Machu Picchu, Angkor Wat, Cape Horn to name a few.

Has this break in travel caused you to change your bucket list? Or maybe you’ve created one?

My list is usually around 25 – 30 items. I continuously add and drop places as I travel and experience different destinations. And some are so awesome, they stay on the list perpetually (Machu Picchu, anyone?

One thing I discovered is that a select few on the “hopefully, some day” list have moved up to a higher priority. I’ve decided that “someday” is as soon as possible.

For purposes of this article, I decided to limit myself to five destinations that I haven’t already experienced. Here are my five with a few of my “can’t misses” for each adventure.

African Safari – animals, Victoria Falls, animals, sunset/sunrise on the plains, Zambezi River, animals

Australia – Great Barrier Reef, Ayers Rock, kangaroos, koalas, opal mining (my birthstone)

New Zealand – glaciers, waterfalls, thermal springs, Maori culture and kiwis!

China – Great Wall, Terra Cotta Warriors, Forbidden City, Chengdu

Ireland – I know, I know. I can’t believe I’ve never been, either!

How about you? What’s on your bucket list?  I’d love to hear from you.

What are you looking forward to?

As social distancing and shelter in place become our status quo, it is important to remember that this is temporary. Eventually the world will reopen, and travel will again be our great memory maker.

What are you looking forward to when we can once again satisfy our wanderlust? Here are a few I listed. Are any of yours on the list?

Anticipation. Looking forward to a trip is almost as much fun as the actual travel. The thrill of booking a flight to a new destination, pre-travel scouting for activities, tweaking the itinerary, shopping for new wardrobe items.

A Discovery in Every Port. The excitement of watching a new destination slide into view from the ship’s deck. Hopping off the ship to go exploring. Sharing port experiences with friends when back on board at the end of the day. Rinse, repeat.

Africa-elephants.jpg

Hotel Bars. Gathering for a pre-dinner cocktail before an evening. Stopping by for a nightcap at the end of the day.

Animal Encounters. Alaskan bears, Caribbean stingrays, South American howler monkeys, Antarctic Emperor penguins. Coming face to face with animals is the ultimate reminder of our place on this incredible globe.

vietnam-street-food.jpg

Dining. A Michelin 3-star meal in Paris, cuttlefish in Venice, barbeque on an Argentinian estancia, street food in Hanoi. No need to be a foodie to savor the tastes and smells of the world’s cuisines.

Iconic Architecture. The rush felt when coming face to face with a structure previously seen only in pictures. Angkor Wat, Taj Mahal, Great Pyramids, Arc de Triomphe, Sydney Opera House, Great Wall.

Souvenir Shopping. Browsing through stalls, haggling in open-air markets. The treasures we bring home are more than keepsakes – they’re reminders of the people we met, the experiences we had and the uniqueness of our destinations.

Beach/Pool Butlers. Those wonderful men and women who mist us, adjust our umbrellas, and keep our glasses full. And paired with some spa time for an absolutely decadent day.

How about you? What are you looking forward to when you’re ready for your next great adventure?  I’d love to hear from you.
