While in Rome

Rome is an extraordinary capital and it can take weeks or more to get in all the sites, cuisine and culture.  But since most of us don’t have weeks in this glorious city, here are a few not to miss experiences on your first visit.

Speaking of first visit, don’t miss the Trevi fountain to ensure this visit won’t be your last. Legend has it that if you toss a coin from your right hand over your left shoulder into the fountain, you’ll return to the Eternal City.

When you visit the Vatican, to get the most out of your day, start early!  There are 54 galleries within Vatican City and the collections are stunning.  Arguably, the most famous, is the Sistine Chapel which holds the striking ceiling artworks created by Michelangelo.

Sit on the gorgeous Spanish Steps to enjoy some people watching. Plan some fun in the beautiful neighborhood Trastevere.  Still clinging to its Bohemian roots, it’s a wonderful stop for a drink, dinner, or to check out some artisan shops.

No one wants to miss the Colosseum, the largest amphitheater in the world and considered to be one of the greatest Roman architectural and engineering works. Earthquakes and stone robbers have left it in ruins, but parts still stand, and an extensive renovation has brought to life the magnitude of staging events and spectacles at this impressive venue that could hold up to 50,000 people.

And while you’re in the area, hike up Palatine Hill. The views from the hill towers are stunning and overlook the Roman Forum and Circus Maximus.  On your way back, keep left to arrive at the Forum to learn more about the Roman Empire’s history.

Did you know the Pantheon is actually a church?   Originally, a temple built to honor the Roman gods, it was converted into St. Mary of the Martyrs. One of the best-preserved monuments of Ancient Rome.

Largo di Torre Argentina, may be best known as a cat sanctuary.  But, it is an important part of Rome’s history. It hosts remains of Pompey’s Theatre and its four temples make up the square where Julius Caesar was murdered.

Also, don’t miss out on the fabulous espresso, awesome wine, and delicious food!
